Mission · About

Science that belongs on the plate.

NanoGreens exists to bring Wolffia and Clover lily — the world’s smallest flowering plants — out of the lab and into kitchens that care about flavor, nutrition, and craft.

Founder

Dr. Paul Fourounjian

One of those scientists was Paul Fourounjian, the founder and technical lead of NanoGreens, with a career dedicated to the research and practical applications for this special plant.

Realizing the potential this tiny plant has from a nutritional standpoint, he dubbed it a “NanoGreen” and started looking into growing it locally in San Diego. We began to compile the healthiest and tastiest strains we could find while developing relevant patents in aquaculture — and the quest to bring this delicious and nutritious plant to market began.

Dr. Paul Fourounjian has dedicated the better part of 13 years studying Wolffia and Clover lily to create an endless amount of plant protein while maintaining high-efficiency water usage.

“Paul has spent around 15 years of his life and his entire PhD to study what he considers one of the most under-appreciated plants on earth — Wolffia and Clover lily. He can’t get his head around why no one eats it anymore, so thus NanoGreens was born. The first company to commercially sell either in the US — we’re happy to have San Diego be the first US city to try our wonderful NanoGreens.”

Research

Patents in progress. Flavor first.

We’re developing three patents to improve antioxidant and protein content, and to gently sanitize and dry Wolffia to improve freshness — without turning a living food into another processed powder.

Specialized aquaculture eliminates many of the usual inputs involved in conventional farming and decreases the labor needed throughout the entire process significantly.
